Brazilian Unicafes goes global
Unicafes Nacional participated in the first General Assembly of the World Farmers Organisation, held in South Africa. The Brazilian Union of cooperation’s sees the opportunity to work together on a global level.
The World Farmers’ Organisation (WFO) wants to bring together national agricultural producer organisations and agricultural producer cooperatives to create policies and advocate on world farmers’ behalf. This makes it possible to improve the economic situation and livelihood of producers, their families and rural communities.
During the General Assembly, Unicafes was represented by Daniela Nascimento, Trias adviser for Unicafes. This partner of Trias is considering to become a member of the WFO. Unicafes is convinced that WFO shall be a great support in representing the interests of family farmers in Brazil. Both organisations encourage the empowerment of rural communities and stimulate the spirit of cooperation amongst several organisations around the world.
“Unicafes needs to ‘think global and act local’ by developing strategic actions for the members discussed at national and international level as well”, says Nascimento. “If Unicafes becomes a member of WFO, they will have access to qualified information to start the dialogue in strategic meetings and open doors for new opportunities.”
Robert Carlson, WFO president, looks forward to the participation of Unicafes. “The WFO needs to have the membership of family farm organisations around the world to represent farmers on global issues such as food security, agricultural trade, international commodity markets, and environmental issues. By working together we can improve these important issues.”
